Recent Sightings June 2022

30 Jun:  Clear skies with a moderate to fresh south westerly.

An afternoon visit to Europa Point only produced three Cory's Shearwaters, 14 Balearic Shearwaters, an adult Mediterranean Gull and three Honey Buzzards.

29 Jun:  Clear skies with a light variable breeze in the morning, picking up after noon to a moderate westerly wind.

An afternoon visit to Europa Point only produced two Audouin's Gulls.

 

28 Jun:  Clear skies with a fresh easterly wind, dying down in the late afternoon and evening.

 

27 Jun:  Clear skies with a moderate to fresh south-westerly wind.

Another day with late raptors arriving across the Strait with two Honey Buzzards, 10 Griffon Vultures and a Booted Eagle.

At Europa Point 30 Mediterranean Gulls, a Black-headed Gull and two Audouin's Gulls were observed.

Three Great Tits seen and heard; one at Rooke battery and two by Mount Alvernia.

 

26 Jun:  Clear skies with a fresh south-westerly in the morning turning to north-westerly in the early afternoon.

A morning watch at Europa Point produced three Gannets, two Cory's Shearwaters, four Balearic Shearwaters, seven Audouin's Gulls, three Black Kites, two Griffon Vultures, two Short-toed Eagles, a Swallow and three Serins.

In the afternoon, at this site, there were two Balearic Shearwaters, three Audouin's Gulls and two Booted Eagles before the northerlies set in.  Later six Balearic Shearwaters, two Flamingoes, five Shags, three Audouin's Gulls, 15 Pallid Swifts, a Common Swift, a Honey Buzzard and a Booted Eagle were seen from the Point.

The three Jackdaws were seen in the morning on the cliffs below Princess Caroline's Battery.

 

25 Jun:  Clear skies with a moderate westerly becoming fresh westerly in the Strait.

A trickle of raptors that consisted of 13 Griffon Vultures, two Short-toed Eagles and two Booted Eagles.

The two Ravens were around Tovey Cottage, and Barbary Partridges on the slopes above Sandy Bay with chicks.  A Woodpigeon was seen in the Botanic Gardens.  Several Audouin's Gulls and six Mediterranean Gulls flew west past Europa Point.

 

24 Jun:  Clear skies with a moderate westerly wind.

A trickle of raptors that consisted of two Honey Buzzards, two Griffon Vultures, two Short-toed Eagles and three Booted Eagles.  One of the Griffons landed on the King's Wharf building.

 

23 Jun:  Clear skies with a moderate westerly in the morning becoming fresh in the Strait. 

A Griffon Vulture, two Short-toed Eagles and three Booted Eagle crossed the Strait and headed north.

 

22 Jun:  Cloudy in the morning with some sunny spells in the afternoon.  Winds westerly in the morning becoming south westerly in the Strait.

A Griffon Vulture was seen over Sandy Bay in the afternoon, and three Short-toed Eagles made landfall over Europa Point mid afternoon.

 

21 Jun:  Overcast skies with some rain drops early in the morning remaining cloudy until mid afternoon when skies cleared.  Winds north-westerly in the morning but westerly later in the afternoon.

A Griffon Vulture crossed the Strait at 16:00hrs.

 

20 Jun:  Mainly clear skies but with some cloud from the west.  Winds northerly in the morning, becoming westerly after midday.

A very late flock of 13 White Storks arrived across the Strait at midday.  Also seen from Europa Point in the morning were single Honey Buzzard, five Black-headed Gulls, two Audouin's Gulls and five Serins.

 

19 Jun:  Clear skies with a moderate westerly wind becoming north-westerly at midday.

A morning visit to Europa Point produced a male Mallard that approached the Point from the south and then headed eastwards.  Also seen was a flock of 24 Mediterranean Gulls, a Black-headed Gull feeding below the point and a Booted Eagle over Windmill Hill.  In the afternoon there were four Honey Buzzards, a Black Kite and a Booted Eagle.  A Short-toed Eagle did not make it and was spotted dead 100m from the coast off Europa Point. 18 Jun:  Clear skies with a light easterly wind becoming light and variable and south westerly mid afternoon.

Two Cory's Shearwaters, eight Balearic Shearwaters, a first summer Gannet, 6 Audouin's Gulls and four Shags were seen in the afternoon from Europa Point.

 

16 Jun:  Clear skies with some cloud from the south in a moderate easterly wind.

Two Cory's Shearwaters, 12 Balearic Shearwaters, and a Shag were seen from Europa point.  Also seen were a Kestrel. a Peregrine, a Booted Eagle and a Serin.

 

15 Jun:  Cloudy skies in the morning clearing mid morning in a light variable to light easterly breeze.

A visit to Europa Point produced six Shags and 52 Balearic Shearwaters. Three Jackdaws were seen in the vicinity of the Moorish Castle.

14 Jun:  Clear skies with a light variable to light easterly wind.  Two Audouin's Gulls and a Sandwich Tern were seen from Europa Point.

 

12 Jun:  Levanter cloud in the morning clearing after midday.  Winds moderate to fresh easterly.

A Short-toed Eagle was found injured on the Sand slopes by members of the EPRU.  It was captured and transported to the raptor Rehabilitation Centre.

09 Jun:  Clear skies with a moderate westerly wind.

At least three Spotted Flycatchers present at the Botanic Gardens.

 

08 Jun:  Clear skies with a moderate to fresh westerly wind.

An evening watch at Europa Point resulted in a Gannet, five Cory's Shearwaters, 26 Balearic Shearwaters, six Shags,  two Mediterranean Gulls, five Black-headed Gulls, eight Honey Buzzards and a Griffon Vulture.

Another Griffon Vulture was seen earlier,  flying low over Westview Promenade chased by Gulls.

 

07 Jun:  Clear skies with a moderate westerly wind. 

At least 11 Balearic Shearwaters were seen heading west at Europa Point.

 

05 Jun:  Clear skies with a moderate westerly wind. 

A Griffon Vulture was observed over Europort in the early afternoon.

 

04 Jun:  Clear skies with some westerly cloud in a light northerly wind in the morning becoming moderate south-westerly in the Strait by mid morning.

A morning visit to Europa Point in the morning produced two adult Gannets, 14 Balearic Shearwaters, two adult Audouin's Gulls and two Shags.  Also seen were two Griffon Vultures and a Swallow.  A Robin was seen on the hill leading down to Sandy Bay.

 

03 Jun:  Clear skies with a moderate westerly becoming fresh in the Strait.

A single Griffon Vulture was seen heading north.

 

02 Jun:  Clear skies with a light variable to moderate westerly in the Strait.

At least 20 Griffon Vultures crossed the Strait.  Two of them were rescued and sent to the Raptor Rehabilitation Unit, to join others from the last week.  the Iberian Magpie was heard in the Vineyards area.

 

01 Jun:  Clear skies with a light variable wind becoming light to moderate south-westerly in the Strait.

A Few Black Kites and Booted Eagles were seen throughout the day but no counts were made.  a visit to Europa Point in the afternoon produced three Cory's Shearwaters, three Shags and three Black-headed Gulls.  Also seen were single Black Kite and Booted Eagle.
